Road Trip Guide to California's Highway 1 - Part 1

I began this article with a list of ten stops along the California coast, but found that I couldn't limit it to ten.

Stretching over 650 miles, California State Highway 1 is not just a road; it’s a journey through some of the U.S.'s most breathtaking landscapes.

This iconic highway hugs the Pacific coastline, offering travelers a mesmerizing blend of rugged cliffs, serene beaches, charming towns, and towering forests.

I have extensive experience navigating this scenic route, as I used to live not far off the highway in Monterey and as your travel planner, I’m here to guide you through a journey that promises relaxation, adventure, and discovery at every turn.

When you picture the West Coast, you likely envision sun-soaked beaches, surf culture, and bustling cities like San Diego and San Francisco.

While these images are certainly emblematic of California, there’s a quieter, more tranquil side to the coast that many overlook.

Beyond the vibrant cities, the California coast unfolds into a series of charming towns and picturesque landscapes that provide the perfect backdrop for a relaxing weekend getaway or an extended vacation.

These destinations offer a unique blend of coastal beauty, rich history, and small-town charm, all easily accessible from the legendary Highway 1.

Let’s embark on a journey through the first six of the most captivating coastal towns along California’s Highway 1, each offering its own slice of paradise.

Fort Bragg

Not to be confused with Fort Bragg, the military base in North Carolina!! The exclamations are necessary.

Nestled along the rugged Northern California coastline, Fort Bragg may not exude the quaintness of some of the other towns on this list, but it is a destination worth exploring.

This coastal town is famed for its striking Glass Beach, where colorful sea glass covers the shore, creating a unique and vibrant landscape.

And while you are out enjoying nature, take in the magnificent old-growth redwood forests: pair coastal adventures with majestic tree canopy explorations for a perfectly balanced nature getaway.

Beyond the beach, the Mendocino Coast Botanical Gardens offer a peaceful retreat, with trails that wind through stunning displays of coastal flora.

For wine enthusiasts, the Pacific Star Winery provides a perfect spot to savor local vintages while gazing out over the Pacific Ocean.

Mendocino Village

Perched on a hilly peninsula, Mendocino Village is a haven for artists and nature lovers alike.

Surrounded by dramatic ocean bluffs on three sides, the village is home to an array of Victorian-era houses, art galleries, and boutique shops.

Stroll through the village and discover a community that thrives on creativity, with local artists showcasing their work in every corner.

The surrounding area also offers ample opportunities for outdoor exploration, with nearby state parks providing trails that meander through lush forests and along rugged coastlines.

Capitola Village by the Sea

One of the oldest vacation retreats on the Pacific Coast, Capitola Village by the Sea is a vibrant coastal town with a distinctly Mediterranean atmosphere.

The downtown area is a colorful mosaic of Victorian homes, boutiques, restaurants, coffee shops, and bars.

The sandy beach is perfect for a leisurely day of sunbathing or a peaceful walk along the shore.

Capitola’s artistic vibe is palpable, with local galleries and events celebrating the creative spirit that defines this charming seaside village.

Monterey

Monterey is a destination that demands more than just a quick visit. This historic town, once the capital of Alta California, is now known for its world-renowned Monterey Bay Aquarium and its stunning coastal views.

I used to run the trail here - the Monterey Bay Coastal Recreation Trail - as it meanders along the coast. In all my decades as a runner this is my favorite place to run. Families biking, walking, pushing strollers - they get in the way of running, but never detracted from my enjoyment.

You will take a leisurely drive along 17-Mile Drive, a private road that offers spectacular views of the rugged coastline, golf courses, and iconic landmarks like the Lone Cypress, estimated to be 250 years old

Monterey’s Cannery Row, immortalized by John Steinbeck, is a vibrant area filled with shops, restaurants, and historical sites that tell the story of the town’s rich past.

Carmel-by-the-Sea

Carmel-by-the-Sea is a storybook town with a village-like atmosphere that enchants visitors from the moment they arrive.

The town is known for its European-style architecture, art galleries, and boutique shops.

Stay at one of the town’s luxury inns or hotels, where you can indulge in some well-deserved pampering.

Don’t miss a visit to the Mission San Carlos Borromeo de Carmelo, a beautifully preserved mission that offers a glimpse into California’s history.

The mission’s peaceful gardens are perfect for a quiet moment of reflection.

San Simeon

San Simeon is a small town with two major attractions that make it a must-visit on your Highway 1 journey.

Hearst Castle, the opulent hilltop estate of media mogul William Randolph Hearst, is a marvel of architecture and art.

Take a tour of the castle’s lavish rooms, expansive gardens, and stunning pools.

Just a short drive away is the Piedras Blancas Elephant Seal Rookery, where you can observe these massive marine mammals as they bask on the rocky shoreline, an experience that is both awe-inspiring and humbling.

Writing this has made me want to embark on this road trip myself - colorful beach glass, towering redwoods, quaint town, peace and quiet.
