Overwater Bungalows Are Closer Than You Think

The overwater bungalow - the ultimate in tropical luxury accomodations. They're like a dream come true. There is something unexpected about being on the water without being on the water. There's no bobbing as a boat might do; there is just the magical hovering over the surface of a turquoise ether that seems exclusively yours and no one else's. Most people consider the Maldives, Fiji, or Bora Bora the ultimate in tropical travel, and their overwater digs the ultimate in exclusivity. However, the magic is much closer to home than you realize, right here in the western hemisphere.

Cayo Espanto (Belize)

Just a two-hour flight from Miami, Atlanta, Charlotte, or Houston, a private island paradise awaits. Cayo Espanto is home to seven intimate villas, all overlooking the Caribbean – pampering guests with a private plunge pool, an exceptional private chef, and a personal houseman. If you can tear yourself away from these idyllic accommodations, take advantage of the sea kayaks and sailboats, full-service spa, world-class fly-fishing for tarpon and bonefish, tours of Mayan ruins, jungle trips, and stellar snorkeling along the world's second-longest barrier reef. Full island rental is available for the most decadent vacations.

Royalton Antigua (Antigua)

Each bungalow offers sparkling views of the Caribbean Sea. You'll be greeted with a welcome glass of sparkling bubbly, and butler service. The villas' spectacular touches like swim-out infinity plunge pools, Jacuzzis, over-water hammocks, and glass-bottom floors invite you observe vibrant marine life swimming below. Guests receive free snorkeling gear, bar service on the terrace during sunset, a romantic dinner, and a personal yoga and fitness instructor.

Amanyara (Turks & Caicos)

Ideally situated between a nature reserve, white-sand beaches, beautiful flora, and a marine national park. Amanyara is best known for its lavish accommodations, many of which have luxe amenities that include everything from wooden decks and free-standing tubs to private gardens and beach pathways and private pools.

Wymara (Turks & Caicos)

With the widest stretch of beach on Grace Bay, the third-longest barrier reef in the world, and a 7,000-square-foot infinity-edge swimming pool, Wymara Resort And Villas exudes a sensual island vibe. There are four villas total, all of which overlook clear-blue waters. The accommodations span multiple stories, and each has its own over-the-water swimming platform that offers direct ocean access. In addition to the dreamy all-white facades and beachy-chic interiors, the main draw is each villa’s infinity-edge ocean pool.

Sandals Royal Caribbean (Jamaica)

An adults-only, all-inclusive oasis. The overwater villas here are actually located on the resort’s exclusive private island, which is just a short boat ride away from the main property (private water taxi service is included). The villas are outfitted with glass-bottom floors, over-water hammocks, private infinity pools, and wooden King-sized beds. Your stay also includes personalized butler service.

Sandals South Coast (Jamaica)

All-inclusive and adults-only. 'nuff said. Sandals South Coast offers 12 overwater villas positioned in the shape of a heart, and secluded along a 500-acre nature preserve. Take in the serene views from the comfort of your two-person soaking tub, relax on the over-water hammock or dive straight into the sea from your swim-up platform. Extravagantly appointed interiors are equipped with glass-bottom floors and spa-inspired bathrooms, and your personalized butler is happy to draw your bath and ferry your refreshments.

I'm inspired. Are you? Let's start planning!

'til next week.
