Five Places That Make You Want to Pick Up Your Camera

Are you pretty good with a camera, or do you subscribe to the “take enough pictures and a few will be wonderful” approach?

Either way, choosing what to photograph is part of the fun of going somewhere new.

And some places can make you rather enthusiastic about it.

You put the camera away, walk around the corner, and out it comes again.

I have five travel photography destinations in mind that could keep you happily occupied this way.

You may know a few of the names, but I suspect at least one will send you off to investigate.

And yes, your phone is welcome.

Hoi An, Vietnam: A Reason to Linger After Dark

In Hoi An, you might photograph a street in the afternoon and return that

evening to find yourself reaching for the camera again.

The old town’s yellow façades and tiled roofs give you plenty to notice by daylight.

Then the lanterns light up, and you have a whole new reason to be out with your camera.

Their reflections bring color to the river, while the shopfronts offer smaller scenes worth a closer look.

You could happily spend an evening wandering between them, although I would leave time to sit somewhere and enjoy it all, too.

A second evening would hardly be a hardship.

Sossusvlei and Deadvlei, Namibia: A Landscape That Almost Looks Drawn

A dark tree stands against pale ground, with an immense orange dune rising behind it.

At Deadvlei, the contrast can be so striking that a photograph scarcely seems real.

Nearby, the dunes of Sossusvlei offer long curves and sharply defined edges, with sunlight and shadow changing their appearance as the morning progresses.

You may arrive wanting to photograph the whole landscape, then find yourself fascinated by the edge of a single dune.

This is one place where it pays to think about photography before settling the itinerary.

Where you stay and how you arrange your morning affect when you can reach the dunes, and the light will not wait while you sort yourself out.

Once you are there, though, give yourself a moment to lower the camera.

That sense of scale deserves your full attention.

Fez, Morocco: The Picture Within the Picture

In the medina of Fez, a workshop might catch your eye and give you every reason to stop.

Then you notice what someone is making.

A weaver at work or a craftsperson shaping metal can be as absorbing to watch as to photograph.

There is a good deal to see here, but you do not have to fit it all into one picture.

Sometimes the most interesting subject is a pair of hands at work.

A good local guide can help you understand what you are seeing and make introductions where appropriate.

Ask before photographing someone, and leave room for a conversation.

You may come away with a story about the person whose work drew you into the shop in the first place.

Lake Bled and the Soča Valley, Slovenia: Follow the Water

An island church in a lake, with mountains behind it?

Lake Bled does give you a rather promising place to start.

You could spend a very pleasant stretch of your trip exploring its views, but I would make room for more of Slovenia while you are there.

In the Soča Valley, the river’s emerald color draws your eye through a landscape of mountains and gorges.

After the broad views around Bled, you may enjoy looking more closely at the water itself, finding a smaller scene that holds your attention.

These are separate areas to enjoy as part of a longer journey, so allow time for each.

Rushing from one photo stop to the next would rather defeat the pleasure of being here.

Edinburgh, Scotland: Let the Streets Lead You

You may head out in Edinburgh with a particular photograph in mind.

Whether you make it there without stopping a dozen times is another matter.

The historic Old Town gives you plenty to work with, from the architecture to the life of the streets.

Then a wider city view tempts you to step back and take in the setting as a whole.

A walk with a local photographer could help you find unfamiliar angles, even if you have visited before.

Afterward, leave yourself some time to wander.

It is much easier to follow your curiosity when you are not watching the clock.

Make a Little Room for Photography

You do not have to book a dedicated photography trip to give your camera a worthwhile outing.

Perhaps you would enjoy a few hours with a local photographer, or an extra night so you can return to somewhere that caught your eye.

If taking pictures is part of the pleasure of travel for you, tell me when we begin

planning.

We can make room for it.

And for whoever has to wait while you take just one more.
