Fascinating San Miguel de Allende

When most people think of Mexico, the visuals that dance in their heads are of beaches, margaritas, mariachis, sugar skulls, and tacos, regardless of whether they have visited Mexico or not.

There is so much more to Mexico, as I'm sure you can imagine. Not discounting the remainder of this huge country (bigger than Alaska, and the 13th largest in the world - there is a lot of vacationing to be done!), today I'll throw the spotlight on beautiful San Miguel de Allende.

U.S tourists mostly visit Mexico in the winter, escaping to its warm sunny shores. However, Mexico is also a a respite from summer heat if you visit its high mountain cities. San Miguel de Allende is one such escape.

San Miguel de Allende, a picturesque town in the heart of Mexico, is a destination that effortlessly blends rich history, vibrant culture, and modern charm.

Located in the central highlands of Mexico, about 170 miles northwest of Mexico City, this colonial-era town is known for its stunning architecture, cobblestone streets, and a lively arts scene that has made it a haven for artists, expats, and travelers alike.

Founded in the 16th century, San Miguel de Allende played a significant role in Mexico's fight for independence, and its history is palpable as you wander through the town.

The centerpiece of San Miguel is the iconic Parroquia de San Miguel Arcángel, a neo-Gothic church with soaring pink spires that dominate the skyline. The church is not just a place of worship but a symbol of the town’s unique blend of old-world charm and artistic flair.

Surrounding the Parroquia is the Jardín Principal, a lively central plaza where locals and visitors gather to enjoy music, food, and the vibrant atmosphere.

San Miguel de Allende’s architectural beauty is complemented by its well-preserved colonial buildings, many of which now house boutique hotels, art galleries, and gourmet restaurants.

The town’s streets are lined with colorful facades, ornate ironwork, and blooming bougainvillea, creating a picture-perfect setting at every turn. The entire town has been designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site, a testament to its cultural and historical significance.

The arts play a central role in San Miguel de Allende’s identity. The town has attracted artists and creatives for decades, drawn by its inspiring landscapes and welcoming community.

Fábrica La Aurora, a former textile factory turned art and design center, is a must-visit for art lovers, featuring galleries, studios, and shops showcasing contemporary Mexican art, furniture, and jewelry. The town also hosts numerous festivals and events throughout the year, including the renowned San Miguel Writers’ Conference and Literary Festival and the La Calaca Festival, a vibrant celebration of Día de los Muertos (Day of the Dead).

Culinary enthusiasts will find much to love in San Miguel de Allende. The town is home to a thriving food scene, ranging from traditional Mexican fare to innovative fusion cuisine. Many restaurants emphasize farm-to-table dining, utilizing fresh, local ingredients. Don’t miss the opportunity to try local specialties such as chiles en nogada or enchiladas mineras, paired with a glass of locally produced wine or mezcal.

What about the retail scene? There are about 50 galleries, antique shops, furniture stores, and cafés.

San Miguel de Allende is also a destination for relaxation and rejuvenation. The surrounding countryside is dotted with hot springs, such as those at La Gruta and Escondido Place, where you can soak in thermal pools surrounded by lush gardens. For a truly luxurious experience, indulge in a spa treatment at one of the town’s upscale hotels.

And upscale luxury is the name of the game when you stay at Rosewood San Miguel de Allende, or Belmond Casa de Sierra Nevada.
